Break the Silence and Get Support

Living with domestic abuse is frightening and many women feel confused about where to turn for help. Taking the first step to seek support is often the most difficult thing to do. Sometimes women don't know what support is available to them but whatever the situation, there is a range of services across Scotland that can provide you with the right advice.

If you are being assaulted by your partner, you must phone the police by calling 999 or your local police force, which will respond immediately. Domestic abuse is a crime which Scottish forces treat seriously and officers are specially-trained to deal with.

If you need to talk about your experiences, call the Scottish Domestic Abuse Helpline. The Helpline received over 21,000 calls last year and whilst some women just want to talk about what is happening to them, others seek information on how to escape an abusive partner or access services such as housing, medical attention and legal guidance.

If you're looking for local services such as safe refuge accommodation, legal advice and counselling, you should contact your local women's aid centre. They can make arrangements in the local community quickly, with little fuss.

No matter what situation you, or someone close to you is in, the right type of support is ready and waiting when or if you need it. Call the confidential Scottish Domestic Abuse Helpline free on 0800 027 1234 or alternatively, log on to www.domesticabuse.co.uk
