Raising the Standards of Care
The world of care is complex - there are a vast range of care services which are there to assist those who are vulnerable or may require help and support with their daily lives. Whether it's providing home care for older people, residential care for those no longer able to live alone, or working with people who have learning or physical disabilities, the 15,000 care services across Scotland offer invaluable support to a wide range of people.
For those looking to access care services, either for themselves or a family member, the choices and decisions that need to be made when selecting the appropriate service may seem daunting. There are a number of routes into care, dependent on people's needs, and a range of National Care Standards have been created by the Scottish Government to detail what people can expect from each and every type of care service.
The National Care Standards have been developed to raise the quality of care in Scotland and ensure people receive the same quality no matter where they live. The Standards are written from the individual's point of view and are based on the principles of dignity, privacy, choice, safety, realising potential and equality and diversity.
The Standards are designed to be used throughout the time the care service is needed, and help guide the person through choosing and using the right care service for their needs. The Standards also play an important role in the care inspection process, as they are used by the Care Commission to measure whether a good quality service is being provided and to help service improve.
There are 23 sets of Standards in total, covering a range of services such as care homes for older people, day care services and respite and short breaks.
'Scotland's National Care Standards are absolutely central to the relationship between the care providers and the people being cared for,' said Jacquie Roberts, Chief Executive of the Care Commission, the body which regulates and inspects care services in Scotland.
She continued, 'They are a clear and explicit expression of the quality of service people can and should expect. They ensure that the outcomes of care are right for the individual.
'We urge everyone who may be using or choosing a care service, for themselves or as a carer, to read the Standard that applies to the service they have an interest in.'
