Cashback for Communities

The Scottish Government is committed to a Safer and Stronger Scotland ensuring young Scots are afforded every opportunity to maximise their potential.

In June 2007, the Justice Secretary announced the Government would establish a new approach to re-investing the money from proceeds of crime to benefit Scotland's communities, especially those hit hardest by crime. The Cashback for Communities initiative works by investing the money in services and activities which could make a real difference to young people's lives.

Young Scot got involved with the Cashback for Communities iniative...Gregor Urquhart is the Communications Director "Our role is really to help promote so all the opportunities, all the events and activities through cashback are all on our What's On website.

Gregor thinks the more free activities there are for young people to channel their energies into, the better…..He says "They're always telling us that one of their main issues in life is finding things to do so cashback activities and all the other information on WOW give them the opportunity to find something that suits them whether it's sport or music, arts or just trying something new"

Scottish Screen is one of the organisations which received funding from the initiative. Jackie McNally is the creative identities project manager and explains there are loads of activities organised for kids to choose from... "There's music, there's drama, there's circus and trapeze stuff, there's visual arts stuff. We've got free running street art, street fashion, animation - a whole range of different things going on".

There are loads of free events happening around Scotland this summer for kids aged between ten and nineteen. The details can be found at www.youngscotwow.org
