Don't give fire a home
Four out of five Scots believe they are not at risk of fire and this complacency has resulted in Scotland having the highest number of fire injuries per capita in the UK. In fact every hour of every day somebody in Scotland has their home damaged or destroyed by fire.
Unfortunately your home is not as safe as you think it is. You may not leave cigarettes unattended or cook when drunk but you could be at risk from an electrical fire. Large electrical appliances can cause fires so avoid putting on washing machines, tumble dryers or dishwashers when you leave the house or when you go to bed. Overloaded sockets are also a potential fire risk. Reduce the risk, and save yourself money, by unplugging the likes of TVs and washing machines when they are not in use.
A smoke alarm is the most effective way of warning you of a fire in your home.
If you are unsure on the best place to fit your smoke alarm or would like a free smoke alarm text FIRE to 61611 for a free home fire safety check.

Comments
I totally agree with your comments on house electrical fire safety. Home Owners should regularly carry out an Electrical Periodic Inspection Report on their property which is the same as an MOT for their car. That way they would be aware of what is safe and what requires upgrading to the relevant electrical standards.David Ogilvie
