Don't Give Fire a Home
There are thousands of house fires in Scotland each year but despite this, many people still think that it won't happen to them.
Although the fire risks from heat sources such as ovens, candles and electric blankets are widely understood, there is less awareness of the risks posed by leaving electrical appliances switched on overnight or while away from the home.
Faults with electrical equipment, such as washing machines, dishwashers and televisions may not always be obvious. The risk to families can be greatly reduced by making sure that they are turned off when no-one is around – both at the switch and at the socket.
The annual fire statistics for Scotland show that every week two families suffer fires in their home due to a faulty washing machine or dishwasher, and one in eight of all accidental domestic fires in Scotland are caused by faulty appliances or cables in the home.
Fitting a smoke alarm is the most effective way of warning you of a fire in your home.
You can also arrange a fire home safety visit from your local Fire and Rescue service. This is a free service where a member of the fire crew will pay a visit to your house to help identify any potential risks, give fire safety advice and fit a free 10 year smoke alarm.
Too arrange your fire home safety visit, text the word FIRE to 61611, or contact your local Fire and Rescue service.
