Go Greener - leave the car at home!
The Scottish Government is encouraging people across the country to leave their cars at home at least once a week to help cut down on the country's impact on the environment.
Scotland's cars release 70% of the country's total transport carbon emissions from transport, but it could be easy to leave the car at home and take alternative transport instead.
One in three car journeys taken in Scotland cover two miles or less, so if your destination is close by, consider whether you could walk instead of driving. You'll not only be helping the environment but boosting your health, too, because a brisk one-mile walk burns the same number of calories as running over the same distance.
Alternatively, you could hop on your bike instead and enjoy a different form of exercise. During busy periods on the road, cycling in bike lanes might even get you to where you're heading quicker than you would if you chose to drive. You'll be glad to be biking past all the cars stuck in traffic!
If every bus in Scotland took just one more car driver every week, the country could save a total of 1.2 million tonnes of carbon from being released into the atmosphere each year. So take the bus or train whenever walking or cycling aren't practical – as well as helping reduce your effect on climate change, you can also relax and enjoy the scenery while someone else does the driving.
More than two thirds of journeys to work are taken by car. Why not think about banding together with some colleagues who live nearby to take turns driving each other to and from work? By car-sharing, you'll help reduce the numbers of cars on the road, save money on fuel, and you could cut down on maintenance bills by reducing everyday wear and tear on your vehicle.
