National Care Standards

The Scottish Government has developed the National Care Standards to ensure that people who use care services in Scotland receive good quality care no matter where they live.

The Standards have been created from the service user’s point of view and explain what they can expect from care services. They are designed to be used throughout the time the care service is needed and guide the person through choosing and using the right care service for their needs.

The National Care Standards are based on the principles of dignity, privacy, choice, safety, realising potential, and equality and diversity. There are 23 sets of Standards in total covering a wide range of services including care homes for older people, day care services and care provided in people’s own homes.

Care services in Scotland are regulated by the Care Commission, which inspects care services across Scotland to make sure that people get the right quality of care as set out in the National Care Standards.
