Steps for Stress
From relationship problems and health issues to debt and unemployment, there is a wide range of things in modern life which can potentially lead to stress.
The Steps for Stress campaign will help you recognise if stress is having an affect on your life and offers tips on how to deal with it now and in the future.
Common problems related to stress, include:
- Being unable to get a restful sleep and being tired throughout the day
- Eating more 'comfort foods'
- Having less energy to take exercise
- Feeling unmotivated to see people or get things done
- Poor memory and concentration
- Weakened immune system, increasing the risk of coughs and colds
- Back pain, headaches and stomach and bowel problems
A self-help guide, containing practical information about dealing with stress, has been distributed across Scotland to libraries, Citizens Advice Bureaux, job centres, housing associations and GP surgeries. The information is also available at www.stepsforstress.org.
Different things work for different people. For some, a long relaxing bath is the perfect way to unwind but for others, nothing beats some fresh air or switching off by watching a film.
Research shows that we need to look after ourselves, which means trying to eat well, resting, trying to be active and cutting down on things that are bad for us like drinking too much alcohol. It also means taking time out to relax and have fun, and trying to think positively.
Other tips for dealing with stress include breaking down problems into small manageable steps, dealing with problems as they arise and prioritising what has to be dealt with now and what can wait.
You can also try writing down 'three good things' that have happened over the past week, talk about problems with a family member or friend or write your problems down.
Relaxation sessions, getting involved in the local community and volunteering can help you feel better.
Tips like these can help you deal with stress before it makes a negative impact on your life.
