Take life on, one step at a time
The new campaign "Take life on, one step at a time", focuses on how you can make small changes to achieve a healthier lifestyle through healthy eating, physical activity and alcohol intake. By adopting these changes, you can help to reduce your risk of heart disease, some forms of cancer and diabetes. In addition you’ll also feel better and improve your general sense of wellbeing.
Statistics
• 67% of women and 56% of men are not active enough for health
• Lack of physical activity is the most common risk factor for coronary heart disease in Scotland
• Rates of physical activity decline with age, with many older people failing to reach their recommended levels. Of men aged between 65 to 74, only 23% do enough physical activity each day, and only 16% of women of the same age meet their targets.
• Walking briskly for a total of 30 minutes 5 days a week will help reduce your risk of heart disease, some forms of cancer and diabetes.
Tips on being more active
• Friendly stroll - Going for a walk with a friend is a great way to spend an evening and a lot cheaper than going to the pub.
• Get out with the kids - Chasing your kids around the garden or park or having a kick about is good for you and fun for them. Swimming is also a fun way to get active with the kids.
• Walking to work - Try walking some of the way to and from work. An easy way to do this is by getting off the bus a couple of stops early.
• Get out at lunchtime - Why not go to the shops or park at lunchtime instead of staying at work? The walk will also make you feel more awake in the afternoon.
• Leave the car -When you pop out to the local shop for the paper or pint of milk why not walk instead of taking the car?
• Get on up! - Draw the curtains, turn up the music and dance around the living room to your favourite songs.
• Take the stairs - Try taking the stairs instead of the lift or escalator. You’ll be amazed how quickly this becomes easy.
• Garden fun - Even planting flowers can be good for you. Gardening keeps you active and it’s a great way to make yourself feel better about having to mow the lawn.
