One Scotland: Tug of War
Working together to tackle racism in Scotland
Scotland has always been a country of many cultures, welcoming people from all over the globe to contribute to our society and our economy. Immigration and emigration have always been part of our history.
With such a diverse mix of people choosing to live in Scotland and contribute to our prosperity, it's important to recognise and value this contribution being made to our country.
Scotland has a reputation for being a friendly place, which people want to visit. We pride ourselves on being a welcoming nation, and have always included new people and their cultures in the fabric of our nation. If you look at your own family history there's every likelihood that your ancestors came to Scotland from far flung lands.
But there is a darker side to our psych as some Scots continue to harbor racist attitudes and this does Scotland no favours. There is simply no place for racism in a modern Scotland and these negative attitudes need to change to allow us to move forward as a united country.
To help make this happen, the Scottish Government's One Scotland; No Place for Racism campaign seeks to highlight the negative impact of racism and the need for all communities to pull together in these challenging economic times.
No Place for Racism will highlight that together we must make a concerted effort to tackle existing racist attitudes and tensions in our communities and stamp them out. It's not just the right thing to do – it is in Scotland's economic interest to do so. In these challenging economic times we need to respect the contribution that everyone makes to Scotland and ultimately this will contribute to economic recovery and growth.
