World Skills
The WorldSkills Competition is the biggest and best skills competition in the world. Competitors from 50 nations compete over four days of intense competition in over 40 different skills for gold, silver and bronze medals. It sets world class standards in over 40 skill categories ranging from cabinet making to web design and hairdressing to engineering.
Worldskills takes place every two years in one of its member countries and in 2011 the competition is coming to London.
1,000 competitors made it through their national competitions to take part in WorldSkills Calgary 2009 where Scotland had some great successes including gold medals in Electrical Installation and Painting and Decorating.
WorldSkills UK is the name for the network of regional and national skills competitions that are held throughout the UK to encourage excellence in skills. Those who take part in these regional and national competitions may have the opportunity to represent their country on the world stage.
If you are aged between 16-23 in vocational education, training or employment then you are eligible to register with WorldSkills UK for the chance to take part in competitions that could see you represent your country at the 2011 WorldSkills finals in London.
The Scottish Government is committed to building a strong framework of skills competitions to recognise the achievements of those in vocational education, training or employment and to boost the skills levels of Scotland and the UK as a whole.
Taking part in the WorldSkills UK competitions has benefits for both employers and young people in vocational jobs. Employers show their commitment to staff development and competitors gain recognition for excelling in a vocational skill. They are also given weeks of training in the build up to the competition to help them focus on their own performance and develop their skills.
